What We Do

The Children’s Centre team works in partnership with the local Health Visiting Team and Midwives to form one Early Start Team. We serve around 4000 children under 5yrs and their families living in; Alwoodley, Roundhay and Moortown areas.

The core purpose of the Children’s Centres is outlined in the Sure Start Children’s Centre Statutory requirements 2013 and states that the aim of a Children’s Centre is to; improve outcomes for young children and their families and reduce inequalities between families in greatest need and their peers in the following areas:

  • child development and school readiness;
  • parenting aspirations and parenting skills; and
  • child and family health and life chances

ARM Children’s Centre Group strives to meet the above outcomes through offering a range of activities and via our 1-1 family support service.

We have three main sites, one in each of our communities from which we offer play sessions to support children’s development and parenting courses to help build parents confidence and skills. We also link up with local community led groups and events to help us reach out to as many families as possible.

Our centres are also used to host a number of activities delivered by private agencies that provide child & family activities such as: music sessions, baby massage, baby yoga and sign and sing classes. For more details of our current activities on offer see our ‘Whats on‘ section

Through our partnership with the local health visitors, community nursery nurses and midwifes our sites are used to host breast feeding support cafe’s, baby clinics, midwife appointments, health check and development reviews.

Our family support service can help families through life changes and challenging times.  We can provide a 1-1 support worker to help families identity challenges and create a step by step plan (Early Help Plan) to overcome any difficulties and to coordinate services or other professionals working with them or their children.

We support families through a range of challenges such as: identifying and supporting children’s additional educational needs,  supporting parents who might be feeling low mood or isolated, helping parents to understand how to manage children’s behaviour,  offer information to support families through relationship breakdowns or bereavement, get support for families struggling with housing or debt issues and supporting families that are new to the area or country plus many more common problems that any parent or family may face at some time.
